Cliftonville FC is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of defender Michael Newberry.
The 27-year-old’s untimely death was announced this morning by the Northern Irish club via a social media post.

The announcement stated: “Cliftonville FC is devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry.
Our thoughts are with Michael’s family, friends, former teammates, and fans who are deeply affected by this heartbreaking news.”
Originally from Newcastle, Newberry began his career with his hometown club before playing for Icelandic team Vikingur Olafsvik and later moving to Northern Ireland to join Linfield.
He achieved two Premiership titles before transferring to Cliftonville in the recent summer. Newberry participated in the Boxing Day match against Crusaders.
His former club, Linfield, also honored him with a message that said: “Linfield FC is devastated by the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.
“Linfield has agreed with NIFL to postpone tonight’s Premiership game against Larne.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern expressed his shock at Michael’s sudden passing.
“Michael was a kind, amiable individual and a highly valued member of our team during his time at Linfield. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult period.”
