Coco Gauff demonstrated her prowess as the women’s No. 2 seed at Wimbledon by securing a convincing victory over Sonay Kartal in their third-round encounter, with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-0. This win propels Gauff into the tournament’s fourth round for the third time, following a first-round loss to Sofia Kenin in the previous year.
Despite the support of the crowd at the All England Club, British player Kartal couldn’t withstand Gauff’s dominant performance. Gauff recovered from a brief setback in the first set, where Kartal managed to level the score at 4-4, by winning the next eight games swiftly within an hour.
Reflecting on the match, Gauff expressed gratitude towards the British audience for their support, stating, “Playing in front of the British crowd is great. You’re respectful, so I appreciate that.” Gauff acknowledged the challenge posed by Kartal, who entered the third-round match as a qualifier ranked 298th in the world after defeating higher-ranked opponents in the earlier rounds.
Looking ahead, Gauff gears up to face fellow American Emma Navarro, seeded 19th, in the upcoming fourth-round clash at Wimbledon.
