Collin Morikawa edges out Patrick Cantlay for last American Olympics spot after U.S. Open

The Olympic golf field has been finalized, with Bryson DeChambeau securing his spot after winning the U.S. Open. Half of the United States’ team was already set before the tournament, and Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa joined them after their performances. Unfortunately, Patrick Cantlay narrowly missed out on qualifying.

Morikawa, who finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics last year, secured his spot with a strong performance at the U.S. Open. Despite a challenging final round, he maintained his position ahead of Cantlay in the Official World Golf Rankings. Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion, also earned his place in the Olympics field.

Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, the top-ranked players in the world, had already qualified for the Olympics. Scheffler’s impressive season on the PGA Tour solidified his spot, while Schauffele, the reigning PGA Championship winner, will also compete in Paris.

The qualifying process for the Olympics is based on the Official World Golf Rankings, with the top 15 players eligible for the event. Each country can send a maximum of four golfers, with the top two eligible players per country making up the 60-man field. Notable players like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Viktor Hovland are among those who have qualified.

The Olympic golf competitions will take place at Le Golf National in Paris, the same venue that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018. The women’s qualification period will end after the Women’s PGA Championship, following similar rules to the men’s competition.
