Dana White expresses disapproval of Donald Cerrone’s decision to come out of retirement.
Recently, “Cowboy” Cerrone announced his intention to end his retirement and make a comeback to the UFC for two more fights. While this news was met with excitement from fans and fellow fighters, UFC CEO Dana White did not share the same sentiment. White made it clear that he is strongly against Cerrone returning to the world of MMA.
During a media scrum following the Contender Series, White stated, “I hate it. I hate it. Love him, hate that.”
White continued, “He retired. For what? What’s left to prove? If it’s about money, we can find another solution. When athletes retire, they do so for a reason. They know it’s time to walk away.”
White emphasized the difficulty of retiring from professional sports, not just for the financial aspect but also for the emotional attachment to the sport. He acknowledged Cerrone’s popularity and achievements but believed it was time for him to move on.
Cerrone, a UFC Hall of Famer, holds numerous records in the promotion but ended his career on a rough patch with several losses. White expressed uncertainty about Cerrone’s motives for returning and emphasized the importance of considering long-term health.
White suggested finding alternative sources of income for Cerrone if money was the driving factor behind his return.
Despite Cerrone’s desire to reach 50 fights in his career, White’s primary concern remains Cerrone’s well-being. The UFC is willing to support Cerrone in transitioning to a different phase of life outside of fighting.
Ultimately, White’s main priority is Cerrone’s health and happiness, and he hopes to steer him away from further physical harm.
It seems that Cerrone’s return to the octagon may be unlikely unless he can convince White otherwise.
White reiterated his care for Cerrone and willingness to assist him in finding a new path beyond fighting.
