After spending 15 years in the NBA, Danny Green has decided to retire from professional basketball.
Green, who is 37 years old, had a successful career playing for six different teams in the NBA – the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Memphis Grizzlies.
“I never thought I would be writing this letter, but I always knew this day would come,” Green expressed in a statement shared on social media. “Basketball has been the center of my life, taking me on incredible journeys around the world and introducing me to amazing people. It’s been a rewarding journey that I am extremely proud of, and I could not have done it without the support of so many.”
“I am grateful for all the friends, family, coaches, and teammates from my high school, college, and professional days; to my wife and child, who have inspired me to not only be a great athlete but a better person every day. I hope to make you proud as I retire my jersey and sneakers and officially step away from the sport.”
“I am excited for what the future holds and eager to tackle new challenges.”
Green was a key player on three NBA championship-winning teams – the Spurs in 2014, Raptors in 2019, and Lakers in 2020. He joins a select group of players in NBA history who have won titles with three different teams.
Prior to being drafted by the Cavaliers in 2009, Green played college basketball at the University of North Carolina for four seasons. During his senior year, he played a significant role in helping the Tar Heels win their fifth national championship.
In a recent podcast, Green revealed that after being released by the Sixers following only two games last season, he did not receive any offers from other teams, leading him to consider retirement.
Looking ahead, Green hopes to transition into the media industry to stay connected to the game he loves.
