Davis Thompson Secures First PGA Tour Win at John Deere Classic, Earns Spot in British Open
Davis Thompson had a flawless performance at TPC Deere Run on Sunday, clinching his first PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois. His impressive win not only marked a career milestone but also secured him a coveted spot in the upcoming British Open at Royal Troon.
Thompson dominated the field with a four-shot lead, finishing at 28-under overall and setting a new tournament scoring record. His stellar play included a remarkable 9-under 62 on Saturday, giving him a two-shot advantage heading into the final round and ultimately securing his first 54-hole lead in his career.
The final round saw Thompson extend his lead with five birdies in the first six holes, carding a 29 on the front nine and building a commanding six-shot lead at the turn. Despite a slight slowdown on the back nine, Thompson’s lead was insurmountable, leading him to a four-shot victory and a ticket to Scotland for the British Open.
Following closely behind Thompson were C.T. Pan, Michael Thorbjornsen, and amateur Luke Clanton, who finished tied for second at 24-under. Clanton’s impressive performance included four birdies in his final five holes, making him the first amateur since 1958 to achieve back-to-back top-10 finishes. Ben Griffin and Carson Young rounded out the top five at 23-under.
At just 25 years old, Thompson’s win at the John Deere Classic adds to his growing success on the PGA Tour, following a runner-up finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This victory marks a significant milestone in his career, with his only previous win coming on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022.
Thompson and Pan secured spots in the British Open as two of the final entrants from the John Deere Classic, with Pan earning the final entry based on his Official World Golf Ranking. The prestigious major championship is set to commence on July 18 at Royal Troon Golf Club, following the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.
