Diego Lopes is eager to make his mark in the featherweight division.
Recent rumors suggest that Ilia Topuria may be moving up to the lightweight division, leaving a potential vacancy in the UFC featherweight title picture. In light of this development, Lopes is eyeing a possible matchup with former champion Alexander Volkanovski. With lightweight champion Islam Makhachev set to defend his belt against Arman Tsarukyan, Lopes sees an opportunity to challenge for the vacant title, potentially facing Volkanovski in the Octagon.
“Alexander Volkanovski, if Ilia is indeed moving up to 155, I am ready to face you in the Octagon. Let’s make it happen on your terms.”
Having reigned over the featherweight division for nearly five years, Volkanovski lost his title to Topuria earlier this year. Despite waiting for a rematch with Topuria, Volkanovski may now have a chance to compete for the vacant title if Topuria decides to move up in weight.
Meanwhile, Lopes has been making waves in the division with a series of impressive performances. Currently on a five-fight winning streak, Lopes recently served as the backup fighter for the UFC 308 title bout between Topuria and Max Holloway.
