Clayton Kershaw’s 18th season is officially underway as he gears up for his debut.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed on Tuesday that the veteran pitcher will take the mound on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels. Kershaw had been recovering from foot and knee surgeries he underwent last November, causing him to miss the start of the season.
With a 2.57 ERA in five rehab starts, including three with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets, Kershaw seems ready to make his mark once again.
Despite being 37 years old, Kershaw remains a key player for the Dodgers, boasting a solid 2.79 ERA since the 2020 season. However, his innings have been limited in recent years due to various injuries, including shoulder surgery and a toe injury last season.
Nevertheless, Kershaw was able to celebrate a second World Series championship with the Dodgers amidst his health struggles.
While some questioned the Dodgers’ decision to bring Kershaw back for another season, the team recognizes his value and leadership. Despite his recent setbacks, Kershaw signed a one-year, $7.5 million deal to return to the team.
Now, with injuries affecting other pitchers on the roster, Kershaw’s return is more crucial than ever. The team is facing challenges with Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and rookie Roki Sasaki sidelined.
