Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías has been suspended by Major League Baseball through the 2025 All-Star break for violating the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy, the league announced on Friday. As part of the suspension, Urías has agreed to undergo an evaluation by the Joint Policy Board and comply with any recommendations made. Currently a free agent, Urías has not played in MLB since 2023.
Commissioner Rob Manfred stated, “The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations that free agent pitcher Julio Urías violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. After reviewing all available evidence, it has been concluded that Mr. Urías violated the Policy and appropriate discipline is warranted.”
The 2025 All-Star break is scheduled from July 14-17, and Urías will be reinstated from the restricted list on July 17. The suspension duration is not specified in terms of games due to the varying number of games played by teams before the All-Star break.
In September 2023, Urías was placed on administrative leave. Following the expiration of his contract with the Dodgers at the end of the season, he has remained unsigned. An incident involving an alleged physical altercation with a woman outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles led to his arrest on September 3, 2023, with law enforcement obtaining a cell phone video of the altercation.
Last April, Urías pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge, resulting in a sentence of 36 months probation, 30 days of community service, and completion of a 52-week counseling course. Several other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement. Urías becomes the first player to be suspended multiple times under the domestic violence policy, having served a 20-game suspension in 2019 for a previous incident.
Despite his off-field issues, Urías has had success on the field, finishing in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting twice during his eight-year MLB career. In 2022, he led the league in earned run average, showcasing his talent amidst the controversies.
