Magomed Ankalaev, the new UFC light heavyweight champion, has quickly become a rival of the typically respectful former champion, Alex Pereira.
At UFC 313 in Las Vegas, Ankalaev dethroned Pereira in a hard-fought unanimous decision, sparking mixed reactions across the sport. Jiří Procházka, a former titleholder who has faced Pereira twice before, was particularly invested in the fight. If Pereira had remained champion, Procházka would have been stuck in title limbo due to their history. Despite initially calling for a trilogy bout with Pereira, Procházka has now shifted his focus to Ankalaev following some unexpected jabs from the new champ on social media.
Procházka expressed his desire to face Ankalaev for the title, citing his dislike for Ankalaev’s style and comments. The Czech fighter, who recently scored a knockout win over Jamahal Hill, believes that Ankalaev’s behavior on social media reflects poorly on him as a champion.
Procházka also criticized Ankalaev’s performance against Pereira, questioning why the new champ didn’t utilize his wrestling more effectively. Despite hoping for a title shot, Procházka may have to wait as a rematch between Ankalaev and Pereira is being considered. Additionally, a bout between Jan Blachowicz and Carlos Ulberg could determine Procházka’s next move in the division.
Undeterred by the obstacles in his path, Procházka remains determined to pursue Ankalaev and secure the light heavyweight title in the future.
