Adil Rami Responds to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Comments on Saudi Pro League
Former French international Adil Rami has fired back at Cristiano Ronaldo following the Al-Nassr star’s claim that the Saudi Pro League is superior to Ligue 1.
Ronaldo made the controversial remarks after receiving the Best Middle East Player award at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, praising the competitiveness of the Saudi league compared to the French top flight.
Rami, a former player for Lille and Marseille, expressed his disagreement with Ronaldo’s statement during a Twitch live stream, calling it a “PR stunt” and highlighting the strength of defenders in Saudi Arabia.
Despite being a fan of Ronaldo, Rami emphasized that the Portuguese forward’s assertion about the quality of the Saudi league was misguided and could mislead others.
While Ligue 1 is recognized as one of the top five leagues in Europe along with the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and La Liga, French clubs have had limited success in European competitions compared to their Spanish, English, Italian, and German counterparts.
Only Marseille has managed to win the Champions League from France, while Spanish clubs lead the way with 20 titles followed by English clubs with 15, Italian teams with 12, and German sides with eight.
France ranks seventh in the list of European countries with Champions League victories, trailing behind the Netherlands and Portugal.
