Francis Ngannou has faced many battles in the ring, but perhaps the toughest fight of his life is one that he can only endure, not conquer.
Making his PFL debut just six months after the tragic loss of his 15-month-old son Kobe, Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, found himself questioning his future. Despite his past accomplishments, the loss of his son had changed him, leading him to doubt his fighting career.
“It was my biggest challenge because I wasn’t the same person I used to be,” Ngannou reflected after his win over Renan Ferreira. “This fight was a test for me to see if I still have what it takes to compete, to handle the pressure, the fight week, the media, and everything. And we made it through.”
Ngannou’s questions were answered when he stepped into the cage and delivered a dominant performance against Ferreira. In less than four minutes, he secured a victory and dedicated it to his late son.
Overwhelmed with emotions post-fight, Ngannou fought back tears while reflecting on the mental obstacles he had to overcome before Saturday night.
“It was a tough journey, mentally,” Ngannou admitted. “From start to finish, it was challenging. I had to learn to live with it, as grieving might never truly end. It’s about moving forward and adapting to this new way of life.”
Surviving the past six months forced Ngannou to dig deep and discover a strength he never knew he had. While nothing could prepare him for the pain he endured, he eventually found a way to emerge from the darkness into the light.
“I thought I was tough, but I realized I wasn’t as tough as I thought,” Ngannou shared. “I’ve tried to empathize with others going through similar struggles, but you can never truly understand until you experience it yourself.”
