Barcelona have reportedly reopened contract negotiations with midfielder Frenkie de Jong in an attempt to persuade him to turn down interest from Arsenal.
De Jong’s future has been a topic of discussion for some time, and it appeared likely that he would leave when Barcelona withdrew their contract offer earlier this season due to his lack of response.
However, following his return from injury and impressive performances under Hansi Flick, the new manager has urged the club to retain De Jong’s services for the upcoming season.
Now, with De Jong expressing interest in a new deal, Barcelona has restarted negotiations, with sporting director Deco presenting a fresh offer.
Deco recently met with De Jong’s agent to discuss a proposed three-year contract with annual earnings similar to his current salary.
The new deal would require De Jong to forego the wages owed to him from when he deferred his salary during the pandemic in 2020.
Barcelona is optimistic about reaching a positive agreement with De Jong, despite interest from Arsenal for a potential transfer this summer as his contract approaches its final year.
De Jong is reportedly eager to stay with Barcelona and extend his stay into his 30s.
