The New York Yankees will be without one of their top power hitters when the 2025 season begins. Giancarlo Stanton will open the season on the injured list after receiving platelet-rich plasma injections in both elbows, the Yankees announced Saturday. Stanton has been dealing with elbow soreness since last year and has not swung a bat in 3-4 weeks.
“It’s definitely not just soreness,” Stanton said earlier this month. “It was a manageable thing last year. That’s how last year and this year will go. It’s not a matter of feeling good or bad, there’s always a level of pain there. It’s best to take time off now.”
Stanton has been away from the team due to a personal matter and has undergone treatment during his absence. The Yankees expect him to rejoin the team in spring training soon.
Last season, Stanton missed about a month due to a hamstring strain but still managed to hit 27 home runs in 114 games. He had a standout postseason performance, setting a Yankees single-postseason record with seven homers in 14 games and earning ALCS MVP honors. Stanton revealed that he played through elbow discomfort during the postseason.
The Yankees have experience playing without Stanton due to various injuries that have limited his playing time in recent years. He is primarily a designated hitter now, and the team rotates players in the DH slot when he is unavailable.
With Stanton sidelined at the start of the season, additional playing time is expected for players like Trent Grisham and the Yankees’ infielders. Ben Rice, a first baseman, may also see more action after hitting three home runs in a game last summer.
At 35 years old, Stanton enters the 2025 season with 429 career home runs, the most among active players. He has three years left on his contract, with the Yankees owing him $66 million over that period.
