English football history is set to witness a groundbreaking change as referees will now announce VAR decisions through the stadium’s public address system during matches. This historic development will be trialled during the upcoming Carabao Cup semi-finals.
The first legs of the final four will see Arsenal hosting Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium on 7 January and Liverpool traveling to Tottenham Hotspur the following day. The reverse fixtures are scheduled for the first week of February, with all four ties experiencing this new evolution of video assistant refereeing.
In line with other competitions, Carabao Cup semi-final referees will now communicate their decisions in coordination with VAR directly to fans in the stadium and those watching on TV with the sound on.
A statement from Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), English football’s refereeing body, disclosed that the PA system would be used each time the referee consults the pitch-side monitor or for factual matters such as accidental handballs by a goalscorer or offside offenses involving the attacker touching the ball.
PGMOL has described this measure as part of their commitment to transparency, aiming to provide greater clarity and understanding of key decisions.
A subsequent statement from the English Football League (EFL), which oversees the Carabao Cup, clarified that only the final decision will be announced in the stadium, without an explanation behind the call.
Howard Webb, the chief of PGMOL referees, is leading the charge to increase transparency in officiating decisions. Initiatives like Match Officials Mic’d Up and in-game explanations aim to dispel the mystery often associated with refereeing calls.
During an episode of Mic’d Up last April, Webb hinted at these announcements, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance the in-stadium experience for fans. He mentioned the possibility of implementing a similar system to FIFA tournaments in the Premier League.
