Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remained unperturbed by Ruben Amorim’s assertion that his team could be the worst in the club’s 147-year history, as per a report.
The head coach of the Red Devils made this exaggerated statement last week following a disappointing 3-1 loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. Amorim’s frustration led to him reportedly breaking a monitor in a post-match dressing room outburst.
After regaining his composure, Amorim expressed to the press: “In ten Premier League games, we have only won two. I am aware of that. Imagine how this feels for a Manchester United fan. Imagine how this feels for me. We now have a new coach who is experiencing more defeats than the previous one.”
“We might be the worst team in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim concluded.
Ratcliffe, per The Guardian, has “no worries” about these dramatic remarks. The minority shareholder of United, with authority over the sporting department, does not believe that the players will revolt against their coach after such a scathing public criticism.
Amorim backtracked on his comments later, clarifying that he was criticizing his own performance rather than the players.
Regardless of the blame, United must find a way to spark a significant turnaround in form to stand a chance at qualifying for European competition next season. Currently, the Red Devils sit in 13th place in the Premier League with a -5 goal difference and only 27 goals scored in 22 matches – fewer than 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Amorim’s struggling squad will face Fulham on Sunday, a team seven points ahead in the standings.
