Rory McIlroy is just over a week away from the biggest victory of his career so far, still basking in the glory of his recent Masters win.
“It’s a rare opportunity to accomplish a lifelong dream,” he said on Wednesday. “I’ve been savoring every moment of it.”
The Masters victory was not just about golf for McIlroy, who had been striving for over a decade to win a major and his whole life to win the Masters.
“I believe people can relate to the struggles one faces in pursuit of their goals, and the effort put into achieving the best version of oneself during that journey,” he said. “I think seeing someone finally achieve something they’ve been working towards for over a decade resonated with many.”
Despite his recent success, McIlroy is back to work at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans this weekend with his Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry, aiming to defend their title.
“Last year’s tournament was a special moment for both of us. It brought back some joy to golf for me in a way, which I think is crucial not to lose,” McIlroy stated. “This event was the spark for the great golf I played last year.”
With McIlroy in the field, this year’s tournament is expected to draw a large crowd, just like the 116,000 fans who attended last year’s event at TPC Louisiana.
Lowry jokingly recalled wondering if McIlroy would still show up after winning the Masters, but McIlroy was committed to defending their title.
Both players reminisced about their experiences at Augusta National, with Lowry admitting it was a strange feeling to be contending for the Masters while also rooting for his friend.
“The whole day at Augusta was one of the toughest rounds of golf I’ve ever played,” McIlroy shared. “I never want to relive that Sunday afternoon on the 15th tee box.”
Since claiming the green jacket, McIlroy has received messages from presidents and various figures, traveled extensively, and now faces the challenge of what’s next in his golf career.
“Rory’s goals now? Who knows!” Lowry exclaimed jokingly. “He can take a break for a while.”
“I do care,” McIlroy insisted, showing his determination. But for the first time in years, the pressure is off… for now, at least until the next major tournament and the talk of a potential grand slam in 2025.
