This series marks Gambhir’s debut as a head coach for a national team. Previously, he had mentoring roles with IPL teams such as Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Despite his successful playing career, coaching the Indian team presents a new set of challenges. The return of key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul for the ODI series will serve as a test of Gambhir’s coaching prowess.

What lies ahead as Gautam Gambhir’s biggest hurdle?
A source within the Indian team dynamics informed ESPN that Gambhir’s primary obstacle will involve managing the team’s star players.
“It’s no easy feat. Unlike in a franchise setup where you call the shots, the national team dynamic requires a different approach. In the Indian dressing room, communication is key, as evident with Dravid’s successful tenure. Dealing with the new generation of cricketers, all of whom are high-profile figures, presents a unique challenge for Gambhir,” the source revealed.
Gambhir’s handling of the selection process for the Sri Lanka tour demonstrates his awareness of these challenges. He collaborated with BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, without imposing his own preferences.
Looking beyond the current series, India has its sights set on the upcoming Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Gambhir’s adept management skills and understanding of international cricket nuances will play a crucial role in India’s quest for success.
