Jerod Mayo initially declared Jacoby Brissett as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback for training camp. However, recent developments show that the competition for the top position is still ongoing.
While Brissett has been leading in practice and preseason, rookie Drake Maye has been making a strong case for himself. Maye, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, has been impressing with his performances and earning more opportunities with the first-string offense.
Although Brissett currently holds the edge on the depth chart, the pressure is mounting on him. Despite this, Brissett remains focused on his own performance rather than the competition.
Brissett emphasized, “Every day I come out here I’m trying to do my best. I don’t really worry about the competition, I more so worry about myself and then being a good teammate.”
Brissett, drafted by the Patriots in 2016, returned to the team this offseason to strengthen the quarterback group. The addition of Maye and Joe Milton has added depth to the position.
While all four quarterbacks have had opportunities this summer, Brissett and Maye have been leading the pack. The battle for the starting role now comes down to these two players.
Despite the competition, Brissett continues to prepare as if he is the starter, stating, “I still treat myself as if I’m the starter.”
Brissett remains focused on the process and is determined to give his best effort, regardless of the outcome. He is prepared for any scenario and is committed to letting things unfold naturally.
