According to reports, the New England Patriots are in discussions with the San Francisco 49ers regarding a potential trade involving wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Head coach Jerod Mayo, however, refrained from confirming or denying these conversations during a press briefing on Tuesday.
In line with the approach of his predecessor Bill Belichick, Mayo chose not to comment on players from other teams. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the opinions and efforts within the team.
Mayo stated, “One thing I did learn from Bill is: I don’t talk about players on other teams. I remember as a player, I appreciated that. I appreciated that the only opinions that mattered were inside the walls. So, I’m still trying to apply that now going forward.”
The Patriots have been actively seeking to strengthen their wide receiver group. Despite drafting two players in the position, they have reportedly been pursuing top-tier wideouts like Aiyuk to enhance their roster.
Aiyuk, a first-round pick in 2021, has been a key player for the 49ers in recent seasons. However, stalled contract negotiations have led to speculation about his potential move to another team.
At present, the Patriots and Cleveland Browns are considered frontrunners in acquiring Aiyuk. His addition would provide a valuable boost to the Patriots’ young receiving corps.
Mayo commented on his team’s wide receivers, praising their dedication and improvement. He emphasized the continuous pursuit of enhancements, whether through trades or other means, to strengthen the team.
Reports suggest that current Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne could be included in the trade package for Aiyuk. Mayo confirmed discussing the matter with Bourne to ensure transparency and address any concerns.
“I did talk to him this morning and it was a good conversation,” Mayo stated. “Once again, I feel like the story is so much further along than anything else. I just wanted to make sure we cleared the air. I do believe in being transparent with the players, and really setting those guys at ease.”
