American tennis player Jessica Pegula suffered a surprising defeat at Wimbledon, losing to Wang Xinyu in a thrilling second-round match. Wang Xinyu, ranked No. 42, secured her first victory over a top-five player, beating Pegula 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1. Pegula, seeded No. 5, became the highest-seeded player to exit the tournament so far.

The 22-year-old Wang Xinyu made history by defeating Pegula, marking her first win against a top-10 player. Additionally, she became the first Chinese player since Zheng Jie in 2008 to defeat a top-five ranked player.

Reflecting on her victory, Wang expressed her happiness, stating, “Jessica was really tough to play on grass. Her ball was super low, and I’m just really happy I won in the end.” Pegula, 30, had high hopes for Wimbledon after reaching the quarterfinals last year, aiming for her first Grand Slam semifinal. However, her journey was cut short by Wang Xinyu’s impressive performance.

In the upcoming third round, Wang Xinyu will face Harriet Dart, who defeated Katie Boulter earlier in the day. Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Ben Shelton emerged victorious in a challenging five-set match against Lloyd Harris. Shelton, seeded No. 14, will now prepare to face Denis Shapovalov in the next round.

Despite Pegula’s defeat, American players had some positive outcomes at Wimbledon. Madison Keys, seeded No. 12, secured a straight-set win over Wang Yafan and will face Marta Kostyuk in the third round. The tournament continues to deliver thrilling matches and unexpected results, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
