American Court Grants Arbitration in Raptors vs. Knicks Lawsuit
A U.S. District Court judge has ruled in favor of the Toronto Raptors in their legal battle against the New York Knicks. The judge granted the Raptors’ motion for arbitration, allowing NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to arbitrate the dispute between the two teams in private.
According to Federal judge Jessica G. L. Clarke, the decision to allow arbitration is based on the NBA Constitution, which gives the Commissioner exclusive jurisdiction over disputes involving NBA teams. The court ruled that the determination of whether the dispute is arbitrable lies with the NBA Commissioner.
The legal conflict between the Knicks and Raptors dates back to August 2023 when the Knicks accused Raptors video coordinator Ike Azotam of stealing confidential information before joining the Toronto team. The Knicks alleged that the Raptors used Azotam to gain an unfair advantage in their coaching and video operations staff.
In response, the Raptors filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming it was a publicity stunt and should be resolved through arbitration by the NBA Commissioner. The Knicks objected to Silver arbitrating the case, citing his close ties to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum.
Despite these objections, the court has upheld the decision to arbitrate the dispute. The Raptors expressed their satisfaction with the ruling, stating that resolving the matter through the NBA is the appropriate course of action.
In conclusion, the Raptors spokesperson said, “We are pleased that the court has agreed to resolve this issue through the NBA’s arbitration process. We hope this brings us closer to a resolution.”
