Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell exercises $18.7 million player option to stay in L.A., per report

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, D’Angelo Russell has decided to opt into the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, worth $18.7 million. The Lakers acquired Russell at the 2023 trade deadline, and he signed a two-year deal last offseason with a player option for this year. Despite trade rumors surrounding him, Russell has chosen to stay with the Lakers for another season.

Russell has shown his value to the Lakers over the past two regular seasons, averaging 17.4 points in the final stretch of the 2022-23 season and setting a new record for three-pointers made in a season. However, he has struggled in the playoffs, particularly in the Western Conference finals and the first round against the Denver Nuggets. His offensive skills are strong, but his defensive weaknesses have raised concerns for a team with championship aspirations.

With Russell opting in, the Lakers now have the option to keep him as their starting point guard or use his salary in a potential trade. This extra flexibility could help the team pursue other players to strengthen their roster. Despite making some high-profile moves in the offseason, including hiring JJ Redick as head coach and drafting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the Lakers still have work to do to become true contenders.

LeBron James remains committed to winning at the highest level, and the Lakers will need to make strategic moves to support his goal. Keeping Russell’s contract on the books is a step in the right direction, providing the team with more options to improve their roster for the upcoming season.
