The legendary Jerry West will be remembered by the Los Angeles Lakers with a special jersey patch during the entirety of the 2024-25 season.
Recently, the team revealed a No. 44 emblem that will adorn the left shoulder of their jerseys in honor of West, who passed away in June at the age of 86. West, famously known as the inspiration for the NBA logo, had a remarkable career with the Lakers, playing 14 seasons, being selected as an All-Star each year, and averaging an impressive 27 points per game. He played a key role in leading the Lakers to a championship in 1972 and was even named NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite the team’s loss in that series. West’s impact on the league was undeniable, earning him a spot in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.
After his playing days, West transitioned into coaching and later into the Lakers’ front office, where he was instrumental in constructing the iconic “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s and the championship-winning teams featuring Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in the early 2000s. He also held positions in the front offices of the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Clippers, leaving a lasting legacy in each organization.
West’s contributions to the sport and his impact on multiple franchises have been recognized by the NBA and the Lakers through various tributes. From reserving a courtside seat in his honor at the Summer League to special ceremonies by rival teams like the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, West’s influence continues to be celebrated. The Lakers have announced plans for a special jersey giveaway at their season opener in October to further pay tribute to the basketball icon.
