Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball will be sidelined for at least one week due to a sprained left ankle sustained during Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Early in the second quarter, Ball made a remarkable step-back 3-pointer over Jarred Vanderbilt. Unfortunately, as he was backpedaling down the court, Ball inadvertently stepped on Vanderbilt’s foot, causing his left ankle to roll and leading to him collapsing in pain.
After committing a tactical foul to stop play, Ball limped to the locker room and was subsequently diagnosed with a left ankle sprain. He did not return to the game and will miss the upcoming match against the Clippers, with a reevaluation scheduled in a week.
Given the Hornets’ struggling record and Ball’s history of ankle injuries, it is expected that the team will prioritize caution in his recovery process. Ball, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has faced multiple injuries throughout his career, including a fractured wrist and various ankle issues.

Prior to the current season, Hornets coach Charles Lee praised Ball’s dedication to his physical well-being and his use of ankle braces for added protection.
“There’s been some really good conversations and I think there’s been a really good plan put in place by our performance staff, front office, and coaching staff,” Lee stated during training camp. “I think to start the year the plan is to try to wear the braces as much as possible to put him in the best position to have success.”
Despite wearing ankle braces, Ball’s injury during the Lakers game highlights the risks involved. With impressive season statistics, Ball’s potential All-Star status may be jeopardized by this setback.
