The Most Expensive High School Jersey Ever: LeBron James’ “The Chosen One” Jersey Up for Auction
The iconic jersey worn by LeBron James in his famous “The Chosen One” photoshoot for Sports Illustrated back in 2002 is set to go up for auction in Hong Kong this September. It is expected to fetch between $1 million and $2 million, making it the most expensive high school jersey ever sold.
Previous auctions of the jersey saw it sell for $187,500 in 2019 and $512,200 in 2021.
Photographer Michael LeBrecht, who captured the iconic images of LeBron in the jersey, spoke to Julien’s, the auction house handling the event scheduled for Sept. 28.
“The last time I saw this jersey was probably the time that I shot it in the locker room at St. Vincent-St. Mary,” LeBrecht recalled. “This was the first time I shot LeBron. It was a real turning point. It’s surreal.”
LeBron, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, wore the jersey for the majority of his junior season at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He went on to be selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and has since become one of the greatest players in the game.
At 39 years old, LeBron recently won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics and is gearing up for his 22nd NBA season.
