The new manager of Barcelona, Hansi Flick, had high praise for striker Robert Lewandowski and the positive team spirit after a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao, securing six points from two games in the 2024-25 La Liga season.
Lamine Yamal opened the scoring for Barca with a deflected shot from distance in the 24th minute, but Oihan Sancet equalized for Athletic Bilbao from the penalty spot 20 minutes later.
Lewandowski, who had hit the woodwork twice before, scored the winning goal from close range in the 75th minute, continuing his impressive form after also scoring in Barca’s opening win against Valencia.
“It’s not easy with our high pressing and the risks we take, but we are performing well,” said former Germany manager Flick.
He added, “Lewandowski is always a threat, regardless of his age. The team spirit is fantastic, and everyone is responding positively. Our two wins and six points are a great start.”
Celta Vigo is the only other team with two wins in the table, with other teams playing their second matches on Sunday.
Reigning champions Real Madrid will face Real Valladolid in their second match, following a 1-1 draw against Mallorca in their opener and facing a potential absence of forward Jude Bellingham due to injury.
Flick was pleased to see midfielder Pedri return from injury, praising his performance and contribution to the team.
He said, “My staff have done a great job with him. Pedri has returned well from injury, playing a key role in balancing the team and linking up play. It’s great to have him back on the field.”
Despite missing key players like Dani Olmo, who is unable to be registered due to Liga rules on squad spending, Flick remains focused on improvement for the next game.
He concluded, “We need to continue improving and working hard for our objectives. Even with important players missing, we are in a good situation and progressing well.”
