After 18 years since his senior debut, Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans has announced his retirement from international duty with Northern Ireland.
Earning his 107th and final cap in a friendly defeat against Spain in June, Evans had been leading his country as captain since 2022.
Coincidentally, facing Spain marked the beginning and end of Evans’ international career, with his first appearance against the same team in September 2006 resulting in a memorable Northern Ireland victory.
Evans was already an international player for Northern Ireland before making his senior debut for Manchester United, making his mark during loan spells at Royal Antwerp and Sunderland.
Despite not becoming a regular starter at Old Trafford until 2008, Evans made 198 appearances before departing for West Bromwich Albion in 2015. His return to United last summer led to an extended contract until 2025.
At 36 years old, Evans has decided to step away from Northern Ireland duty ahead of upcoming international breaks, citing it as a result of “much thought and consideration.” He expressed gratitude for the privilege of representing his country.
His participation in Euro 2016 was highlighted as a career peak, being part of Northern Ireland’s first major tournament in three decades.
While starting for Manchester United in recent matches, Evans has played a limited role in the Premier League, primarily serving as a backup to other defenders as he approaches the end of his playing career.
