Manchester United’s recently appointed sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has unveiled his plans for the club and voiced his support for Erik ten Hag, whom he hails as “one of Europe’s top coaches.”
Ashworth officially began his role at Old Trafford on July 1 after a period of gardening leave from Newcastle United. The 53-year-old was highly sought after by Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos Group, following their minority stake acquisition in the club. He is seen as a key figure in the club’s off-field restructuring, aiming to elevate United back to the summit of English football.

Ashworth is aligned with this vision and believes that Erik ten Hag, who recently signed a contract extension until 2026, is the ideal candidate to lead the team forward. Ten Hag guided United to two trophies during his tenure and survived a performance review at the end of the previous season.
Dan Ashworth’s Address to the United Supporters
In a heartfelt letter to the fans, Ashworth stated: “Omar Berrada has assumed the role of chief executive, with Jason Wilcox as technical director, and we are wasting no time in getting to work.
Our initial major decision was to extend Erik ten Hag’s contract as the first-team manager until June 2026, reflecting our confidence in him as one of the top coaches in Europe and the individual we want to collaborate with to restore the team to its former glory.”
Despite a disappointing season that saw United finish eighth in the Premier League and exit the Champions League early, the team lifted the FA Cup by defeating Manchester City at Wembley, ending on a positive note.
Ashworth emphasized, “Our collective objective is to consistently achieve those levels. It is our responsibility, alongside Jason, to create the necessary support systems and environment around Erik, the staff, and players to make this a reality.
“The energy and determination within the group are palpable as the players and staff return from their break, with exciting new additions to the squad and coaching staff.”

Beyond On-Field Developments
Ashworth is also overseeing renovations at the club’s Carrington training facility, aiming to enhance the infrastructure for all teams.
“Significant changes are underway at Carrington as we embark on a £50 million redevelopment of the training ground over the season, showcasing our dedication to improving the club’s facilities,” he revealed.
“While adjustments may be needed this season, all our teams – men’s, women’s, and Academy – will have access to top-tier facilities, with the promise of a fully revitalized, world-class site upon completion of the project.
“The scale of opportunities at Manchester United is immense as we evaluate and rejuvenate all aspects of the club,” Ashworth concluded. “Our primary focus is on restoring the team to its former glory on the pitch. It will take time, but with Omar and the new leadership team, we are committed to achieving it.”
