Mariners could sign away star third baseman from division rivals, per insider

For years, the Seattle Mariners have been chasing the Houston Astros in the American League West. In 2024, it seemed like the Mariners might finally overtake their rivals, but now the two teams are neck and neck.

As of Monday, the Astros and Mariners are tied for the division lead, with the Astros holding the tiebreaker based on winning percentage. The race is shaping up to be one of the tightest in baseball, especially as both teams are heating up after the All-Star break.

Despite the intense rivalry between the two clubs, there’s a possibility that star players could switch sides in free agency. Alex Bregman, in particular, is in the final year of his contract with the Astros and could potentially join the Mariners in 2025.

Ken Rosenthal, a respected MLB insider, suggested on Fair Territory that the Mariners could be a great fit for Bregman in free agency. Despite a slightly down season, Bregman has shown flashes of his offensive prowess, making him an attractive option for Seattle.

Even if Bregman’s numbers are not at their peak, he would still be an upgrade for the Mariners, who are struggling to get production from their third basemen. The upcoming series between the Astros and Mariners in September could be crucial in determining the division winner and could also showcase Bregman’s potential impact on both teams.
