The Miami Marlins have appointed Clayton McCullough as their newest manager, the team revealed on Monday. McCullough is set to lead the Marlins as the 17th manager in the franchise’s history and the third since 2022. He takes over a Marlins team from 2024 that ended with a record of 62-100, finishing last in the National League East.
Peter Bendix, the president of baseball operations, expressed his enthusiasm about McCullough joining the Marlins, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Clayton and his family to the Marlins. His character, dedication to people and culture, focus on player development, and drive to win all make him a perfect match for our organization. His impressive track record, ability to build relationships, and positive energy on a daily basis stood out during our selection process. It is evident that Clayton’s values and vision align seamlessly with ours, and we are eager to embark on the next exciting chapter for our club.”
At 44 years old, McCullough has been the first-base coach for the Dodgers since 2021. Prior to this role, he managed teams in the Blue Jays’ minor-league system for several seasons. McCullough and Marlins assistant general manager Gabe Kapler previously worked together in the Dodgers’ player development department. As a former player, McCullough was drafted by Cleveland in the 22nd round in 2002 from East Carolina University. He spent four seasons as a catcher in the Cleveland system, reaching the Triple-A level in his final season of 2005.
The search for a new manager began after Skip Schumaker departed at the end of the 2024 season. Following the exit of former general manager Kim Ng, who hired Schumaker, and the strategic shift towards a rebuild under Ng’s successor, Peter Bendix, Schumaker’s contract was adjusted to exclude a club option for 2025. This change was likely made out of respect for Schumaker, who opted to explore other opportunities in baseball. Schumaker guided the Marlins to 84 wins and a surprising playoff appearance in 2023, earning him the NL Manager of the Year award. However, the team faced significant challenges in 2024.
Considering the Marlins’ current status as a team in transition and the uncertainties surrounding principal owner Bruce Sherman’s commitment, McCullough’s immediate prospects with the team may not appear overly optimistic. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that McCullough will be given time to make an impact through nurturing the development of the Marlins’ young players already in place and those upcoming.
