Joshua Kirkzee made a stunning debut for Man United, coming off the bench to score a last-minute goal that secured a 1-0 victory over Fulham.
The 23-year-old summer signing from Bologna was initially left on the bench by manager Erik Ten Hag, who opted for a lineup without a recognized striker.
However, Kirkzee made a significant impact when he scored from Alejandro Garnacho’s cross in the 87th minute, sealing the win for United.
Fulham’s keeper Bernd Leno made crucial saves to deny Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, while Andre Onana also thwarted Fulham’s attacks, keeping United in the game.
No Recognised Striker
Ten Hag handed a debut to Noussair Mazraoui and left Matthijs de Ligt and Zirkzee on the bench. Marco Silva fielded Emile Smith Rowe in the starting lineup, with seven players from the team that beat United in January.
Early in the game, Mazraoui made a vital intervention to prevent Fulham from scoring, while Fernandes and Casemiro had chances to put United ahead.
Fulham the Brighter
Fulham started the second half brightly, with Iwobi and Tete creating chances, but United’s defense held firm.
Zirkzee and Garnacho were introduced in the second half, adding energy to United’s attack. Fulham had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize on them.
In the dying minutes of the game, Zirkzee’s goal secured the win for United, much to the delight of the home fans.
Despite some late drama, United held on to claim a crucial victory in their opening game of the season.
