The latest excitement in Mets land revolves around infielder José Iglesias, also known as Candelita, who took the stage after the team’s 7-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night.
After enjoying the Mets’ 12th win in their last 14 games, the 32,465 fans at Citi Field were treated to a performance by Iglesias, who signed with the team in December and wowed the crowd by performing his hit “OMG” in uniform.
Not only did the fans enjoy the show, but Iglesias’ teammates and even Mr. and Mrs. Met joined him on the field to show their support.
“That was a special moment,” said Iglesias, reflecting on the experience. “It shows how close-knit we are as a team. We’re enjoying the journey and taking it one day at a time.”
“This group has become a family. It’s great. We have great human beings here. We are clicking, we care about each other and we are playing good baseball,” Iglesias added.
Since Iglesias joined the Mets in late May, using “OMG” as his walkup song, the team has seen a resurgence with a 17-6 record and now sit just one game out of the last NL wild card spot.
“OMG” was originally set to be released in July but was pushed up a week early due to popular demand.
“It’s hard to put into words what I’m feeling right now,” Iglesias expressed. “There are so many emotions. It was an amazing game. The team continues to deliver. It’s a dream come true. I’m incredibly grateful. … I’m on cloud nine.”
