Miami Dolphins not offering Tua Tagovailoa “market value” contract

Three weeks ago, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa expressed his eagerness to secure a contract extension with the team during a media session in South Florida. He mentioned feeling “antsy” to finalize a deal and acknowledged that the “market is the market” in terms of the negotiation process.

However, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington recently provided an update on the situation during NFL Live, casting doubt on the likelihood of a quick resolution to Tagovailoa’s contract talks.

Darlington stated, “Currently, the Dolphins’ contract offers do not align with the market value established by deals for quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence. This indicates that further negotiations will be necessary before an agreement is reached. While it’s not time to panic just yet, my initial optimism has been tempered by the current circumstances.“

Darlington emphasized, “Based on my discussions, Miami’s offers are not in the same financial ballpark as those received by Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence, which speaks volumes about the current state of negotiations. However, it’s important to remember that negotiations are fluid and can change rapidly.“

In recent months, the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars awarded lucrative contracts to their quarterbacks, Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence, respectively, with massive guarantees involved.

Tagovailoa, Miami’s 2020 first-round draft pick, is seeking compensation for his impressive performance in the 2023 season, where he led the league in passing yards and played a significant role in the team’s playoff run.

Darlington also speculated that Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love may secure an extension before Tagovailoa, which could add further complexity to the situation.

The Dolphins are seemingly taking a firm stance in negotiations with their young quarterback, and only time will reveal the outcome of their strategic approach.
