It’s the year 2025, and as expected, some of the top players like Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes have already found new teams. However, there are still some notable free agents and trade targets available, leading to a daily dose of MLB rumors as we progress through the second half of the offseason. Check out the latest rumors for today below.
Alonso’s Offer to Mets
Slugger Pete Alonso is currently a free agent and is showing interest in returning to the New York Mets, the team he has played for his entire career so far. Reports suggest that Alonso’s camp, led by agent Scott Boras, has proposed a three-year deal to the Mets with opt-outs included. The Mets are reportedly considering bringing back Alonso, but are cautious about committing to a long-term contract. Perhaps these terms will facilitate negotiations.
Alonso, who is 29 years old, has been a powerful force for the Mets, hitting a total of 226 home runs over his six seasons with the team, including a standout 53-homer season as a rookie. While Alonso continues to make solid contact, his performance has dipped in the last two seasons, with an increasing strikeout rate. Combined with his below-average fielding, there are concerns about how he will perform as he gets older, which may explain his limited market value this offseason.
Yankees Open to Trading Stroman
The New York Yankees are looking to trade veteran pitcher Marcus Stroman and are willing to absorb some of his salary in a deal, according to reports. Stroman, 33, is set to earn $18 million for the 2025 season, with a player option for 2026 based on innings pitched. The Yankees are likely exploring a Stroman trade to free up resources for infield upgrades, either through trades or free agency, as they seek better options than their current choices of Oswaldo Cabrera or DJ LeMahieu.
Stroman’s performance in 2024 saw him post a 4.31 ERA and 4.62 FIP over 154 2/3 innings, including 29 starts and one relief appearance. Throughout his career, Stroman has maintained an ERA+ of 113 and a WAR of 22.2 across ten seasons in the MLB.
O’s Reach Agreement with Kittredge
The Baltimore Orioles have struck a deal with veteran right-handed reliever Andrew Kittredge on a one-year contract worth a minimum of $10 million, as per reports. The contract includes $9 million for the upcoming season and a $9 million team option with a $1 million buyout for 2026.
Kittredge, who will turn 35 in March, is coming off a solid 2024 season with the Cardinals, where he posted a 2.80 ERA in 70 2/3 innings of high-leverage relief work. Throughout his eight-year MLB career, Kittredge has maintained an OPS+ of 121, with the majority of his experience coming from the American League East during his time with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Cubs Add Rea to Roster
The Chicago Cubs have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Colin Rea to a one-year contract valued at $5 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Rea previously played under current Cubs manager Craig Counsell with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021 and 2023. He is expected to compete for a spot as a swingman or contend with Javier Assad for the fifth starter position during spring training. In 2024, Rea recorded a 4.29 ERA over 167 2/3 innings across 27 starts and five relief appearances with the Brewers. Rea was not listed among the top 50 free agents.
