We are now in February, with spring training camps set to open in Arizona and Florida. Despite this, there are still some notable free agents waiting to sign and trade candidates waiting to make moves. Below are some of the latest hot-stove rumors from Tuesday.
Red Sox and Cardinals Discuss Potential Trade for Nolan Arenado
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that the Red Sox and Cardinals have been in talks about a trade involving third baseman Nolan Arenado moving from St. Louis to Boston. While this is not the first time these teams have been linked in discussions about Arenado, no agreement has been reached yet. It remains to be seen if this latest round of talks will lead to a deal.
Last season, Arenado, 33, posted a .272/.325/.394 batting line with 16 home runs and two stolen bases. He was valued at 2.5 Wins Above Replacement.
The Cardinals have been open about their willingness to move Arenado this offseason. He is owed $32 million for the upcoming season and $27 million the following year. Arenado also has full no-trade protection, giving him control over where he ends up, if anywhere, before the start of the season.
Cubs Acquire Ryan Brasier
The Cubs have traded for right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier from the Dodgers, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Dodgers will receive a player to be named later in the deal.
Brasier, 37, appeared in 29 games for the Dodgers last season, posting a 110 ERA+ and a 5.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He was designated for assignment by the Dodgers after they added Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates to their bullpen.
Diamondbacks Re-Sign Randal Grichuk
The Diamondbacks have brought back veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk on a one-year deal worth $5 million, with a mutual option for 2026, according to MLB’s Mark Feinsand.
Last season, Grichuk, 33, had a career-best performance with the Diamondbacks, hitting .291/.348/.528 with 12 home runs and 2.2 Wins Above Replacement in 106 games while primarily facing left-handed pitching.
Yankees Extend Tim Hill
The New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year, $2.85 million contract with veteran left-handed reliever Tim Hill, with a team option for 2026, ESPN reports.
Hill, 34, joined the Yankees last year after being released by the White Sox. In 35 appearances, he posted a 2.05 ERA with 18 strikeouts and eight walks. Throughout his MLB career, Hill has an ERA+ of 105 and an FIP of 4.11.
Returning to the Yankees for the 2025 season, Hill will bolster a bullpen that includes standout relievers Devin Williams and Fernando Cruz.
Orioles Sign Ramón Laureano
The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran outfielder Ramón Laureano to a one-year, $4 million contract. Laureano, 30, played for the Cleveland Guardians and Atlanta Braves last season, hitting .259/.311/.437 with 11 home runs in 98 games.
Laureano, who has a career 108 OPS+, can play all outfield positions but is best suited for a corner spot. He joins an Orioles outfield mix that includes Cedric Mullins, Tyler O’Neill, Colton Cowser, Dylan Carlson, and Heston Kjerstad.
Twins Add Danny Coulombe to Bullpen
The Minnesota Twins have signed left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe to a one-year deal worth $3 million, per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Coulombe, 35, had an impressive 2024 season with the Orioles, posting a 2.12 ERA with 32 strikeouts and only five walks in 29 2/3 innings. Over the past five seasons, he has an ERA+ of 152 and an FIP of 3.20. Coulombe previously pitched for the Twins from 2020-2022.
