The MLB trade deadline always brings a sense of excitement, and this year was no different with the pace and magnitude of the deals. One of the key elements of a successful trade is when both sides benefit, creating a win-win situation. As a former general manager, I have identified five trades from this deadline that stood out as win-win scenarios.

New York Yankees acquire 2B Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins for prospects C Agustin Ramirez, SS Jared Serna, and 3B Abrahan Ramirez

The Yankees made a smart move by adding Chisholm to their roster. Chisholm brings energy, versatility, and speed to the team, while also offering 2.5 years of club control. His impressive performance with four home runs in his first three games with the Yankees has already made an impact. This trade addressed the Yankees’ need for speed and balance in their lineup without giving up any key players or top prospects.

On the other hand, the Marlins took a calculated risk by acquiring prospects with potential upside. If the prospects can fulfill their potential, Miami could benefit from their offensive contributions and defensive abilities. In a competitive NL East division, the Marlins need to take chances and make strategic trades to stay competitive.

San Diego Padres acquire RHP Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays for prospects RHP Dylan Lesko, OF Homer Bush Jr., and C J.D. Gonzalez

The Padres bolstered their bullpen by acquiring Adam, a reliable setup man with impressive stats. This trade, along with their previous acquisition of Tanner Scott, strengthens the Padres’ bullpen for a potential playoff push. On the other hand, Tampa Bay acquired promising prospects with high ceilings, showing their commitment to player development and future success.

Boston Red Sox acquire pitcher Quinn Priester from the Pittsburgh Pirates for second baseman Nick Yorke

The Red Sox and Pirates engaged in a prospect-for-prospect trade, showcasing their commitment to building for the future. Priester brings potential and fills a need in the Red Sox’s system, while Yorke offers versatility and offensive upside for the Pirates. Both teams traded from areas of strength, demonstrating a strategic approach to roster development.

Oakland Athletics acquire pitcher Lucas Erceg from the Kansas City Royals for prospects Mason Barnett, Will Klein, and Dickey

The Athletics made a calculated decision to trade Erceg, a power arm with impressive potential, to acquire promising prospects. This trade showcases Oakland’s focus on player development and creative roster management. On the other hand, the Royals added a valuable asset in Erceg to strengthen their bullpen for a playoff run, demonstrating a strategic move to enhance their pitching depth.

Los Angeles Dodgers acquire pitcher Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers for prospects Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney

The Dodgers secured a top-tier starting pitcher in Flaherty without compromising their key players or top prospects. This trade positions the Dodgers as strong contenders for a playoff run with Flaherty’s dominant performance. The Tigers made a strategic move by acquiring promising prospects in exchange for Flaherty, setting the stage for future success.
