Gregory Rodrigues suffered a defeat against veteran Jared Cannonier in his first UFC main event last Saturday in Las Vegas. It was revealed that his recovery after the weight cut was not optimal.
Rodrigues, also known as “Robocop,” had a strong start in the fight, knocking down Cannonier multiple times in the first round. However, he began to slow down in the following rounds. Cannonier ultimately secured the victory in the fourth round with a brutal elbow strike.
In a statement shared on social media, Rodrigues addressed his loss and mentioned facing “several issues” leading up to the bout.
Despite the defeat, Rodrigues expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete against a top contender like Cannonier. He acknowledged the lessons learned from the fight and highlighted areas for improvement in his performance.
Rodrigues also revealed the challenges he faced in recovering after the weight cut, noting that his body was not responding as expected. Despite the setback, he remains determined to continue his journey in the UFC.
The loss to Cannonier ended Rodrigues’s three-fight winning streak in the UFC, bringing his record to 7-3 since joining the promotion in 2021. He has earned five of his seven victories in the octagon by stoppage.
On the other hand, Cannonier bounced back with a win after consecutive losses to Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho.
