Each year brings a fresh attempt to inject some excitement into the NASCAR All-Star Race.
The format for the 2025 edition was unveiled by NASCAR on Wednesday, featuring a new optional caution flag that can be thrown before lap 220 of the 250-lap race.
The “promoter’s caution” is designed to shake up the race’s dynamics, offering a chance to reset the field for a potentially more thrilling finish. This caution must be utilized before lap 220, but cannot be thrown after lap 200 if a wreck or debris caution occurs beyond that point.
The addition of this optional caution is a response to concerns about potentially lackluster racing at the North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 18. The quality of short-track racing in the Cup Series has suffered due to the current car’s characteristics, leading to fewer passing opportunities and less excitement on the track.
To combat the possibility of a dull race, the optional caution could be used to bunch up the cars and set the stage for an exhilarating final stretch.
“The NASCAR All-Star Race continues to evolve as one of the most fun and innovative events on our calendar,” NASCAR vice president John Probst said in a statement. “Returning to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway for the third year in a row allows us to honor our sport’s roots while pushing the envelope with fresh competitive elements. The introduction of the Manufacturer Showdown brings a new layer of intensity and pride for our OEM partners, and fans can expect even more strategy, teamwork, and drama on race day.”
The Manufacturer Showdown will involve an equal number of Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota teams, with the automaker whose cars have the lowest combined finish emerging as the winner.
This optional caution is just the latest in a series of innovations introduced in recent All-Star Races, including option tires and final restart orders based on average finishes in earlier stages. While these efforts aim to keep the All-Star Race relevant, some argue that the event may have run its course, suggesting that NASCAR could benefit from giving teams an off weekend instead of hosting a race that features drivers who compete in numerous points events throughout the season.
The 250-lap race will be 50 laps longer than the 2024 edition, with automatic entries for drivers who have won races in 2024 or 2025, previous All-Star Race winners, or Cup Series champions. Those who do not meet these criteria will compete in a 100-lap qualifying race, with the top two finishers earning a spot in the main event alongside the driver selected by fans to participate in the All-Star Race.
