The NBA Cup has undergone a transformation, not just in name but in appearance as well. The league’s second annual in-season tournament, previously known as the In-Season Tournament, will kick off on Nov. 12 with a fresh new look. The courts, designed by artist Victor Solomon, now feature three concentric circles in tonal hues of each team’s core color, departing from last year’s design.
The distinct runway that spanned the court has been removed, resulting in a more subtle and refined color scheme. The primary objective of making it evident to viewers that they are witnessing something beyond a regular-season game remains unchanged.
The concentric circles symbolize the three stages of the tournament: group play, quarterfinals in team markets, and Las Vegas. Solomon explained the design process, stating, “We took each team’s core colors and then had these three stacked, gradient steps along the way.”
Team creative directors collaborated with Solomon to add a unique touch to each court. The courts now feature logos, wordmarks, or graphics that represent each team’s identity. The courts are meant to be evocative and eye-catching.
Unlike the previous tournament where courts were linked to City Edition uniforms, this time home teams will wear Statement Edition uniforms, while road teams will wear white Association Edition uniforms. This contrast between the courts and uniforms aims to create a visually engaging experience.
The NBA Cup will commence on Nov. 12 with seven “Cup Nights” of group play. The quarterfinals will take place on Dec. 10 and 11, followed by the semifinals in Las Vegas on Dec. 14 and the championship game on Dec. 17.
Additional details about the new courts include symbolic references such as representing a champion’s journey to the top and the use of concentric circles resembling a spotlight. The league ensured that there would be no manufacturing issues this time around, with every court being brand new and meticulously crafted.
With the revamped design and careful planning, the NBA Cup promises to be a visually stunning and engaging event for fans and players alike.
“This tournament is fiercely competitive.”
