Novak Djokovic has added a new face to his coaching staff as he gears up for the Australian Open in January, where he aims to clinch his 25th Grand Slam title. And the newest member? None other than Andy Murray.
Yes, you read that right. The British tennis star, who secured two Grand Slam victories and bid farewell to professional tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will now be lending his expertise to his former rival.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Novak’s team during the offseason to assist with his preparations for the Australian Open,” Murray expressed in a statement. “I’m eager for this opportunity and excited to collaborate with Novak to help him achieve his objectives.”
Djokovic and Murray, both aged 37 and born within a week of each other in 1987, have faced off on the court numerous times throughout their careers. Djokovic holds the upper hand in their 36 encounters, with 25 victories to Murray’s 11. In finals alone, Djokovic triumphed over Murray 11 times, while Murray claimed victory in eight instances. Notably, Djokovic dominated Murray in Grand Slam events with an 8-2 record.
While Murray faced defeat against Djokovic in four out of six Australian Open finals (2011, 2015, 2015, 2016), there is still much to be gleaned from such experiences. Despite not clinching the Australian Open title, Murray’s five final appearances underscore his proficiency in the tournament.
Reflecting on their past encounters at the Australian Open, Djokovic remarked, “I am thrilled to have one of my greatest competitors by my side as my coach.” Djokovic stated. “I eagerly anticipate the commencement of the season and the opportunity to compete alongside Andy in Australia, where we have shared many memorable moments.”
Their history at the Australian Open, coupled with their longstanding rivalry, likely influenced Djokovic’s decision to enlist Murray’s expertise, as highlighted in a promotional video narrated by Djokovic that was shared on social media over the weekend.
The Australian Open is set to kick off on January 12, 2025.
