Australian tennis player Alexei Popyrin has caused a major upset at the US Open by defeating world number two and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Popyrin took control of the match by winning the first two sets. Despite Djokovic’s efforts to stage a comeback in the third set, Popyrin ultimately secured victory by winning the final set with a score of 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4.

This marks the first time in 20 years that Djokovic has been eliminated before the fourth round of the US Open, with Lleyton Hewitt being the last Australian to achieve this feat.

After a competitive start to the match, Popyrin managed to break Djokovic and claim the first set 6-4, gaining a crucial advantage.

In the second set, Djokovic briefly took the lead before Popyrin once again broke him, securing a 6-4 win in the set.

Despite facing challenges and an ankle injury, Popyrin maintained his composure and won the second set, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Djokovic struggled with errors in the match, committing double faults and unforced errors, which allowed Popyrin to capitalize on his mistakes.

Although Djokovic fought back in the third set and displayed his skill, Popyrin’s strong performance in the match ultimately led to his victory.

With an impressive display of skill and determination, Popyrin secured his first-ever win over a top-five ranked player, advancing to the fourth round where he will face American player Frances Tiafoe.
