The United States men’s soccer squad has secured a spot in the knockout phase of the Paris Olympics competition following a 3–0 triumph over Guinea on Tuesday. This marks the USMNT’s furthest advancement in the Olympics since 2000.
Team USA took the lead in the 14th minute with Djordje Mihailovic bending a free kick into the top left corner.
Kevin Paredes extended USA’s lead in the 31st minute, racing down the right flank and slotting a shot past Guinea’s goalkeeper Soumaïla Sylla.
Paredes’ goal celebration dance could rival Steph Curry’s enthusiastic high-step in the U.S. men’s basketball team’s recent victory over Serbia as the highlight of the Paris Olympics.
The left wing back notched another goal in the 75th minute. Paredes received a long pass from Jack McGlynn, cut inside from the wing to the center, and unleashed a left-footed strike into the top right corner of the net for a 3–0 lead.
Paredes becomes the second USMNT player to score two goals in an Olympic game since Rick Davis achieved the feat in 1984 against Costa Rica.
Team USA progresses from the group stage with six points, finishing second in Group A with a 2–0–1 record. The U.S. suffered a 3–0 defeat to host nation France in the opener but bounced back with a 4–1 win over New Zealand before Tuesday’s victory against Guinea.
Next up for the United States is a quarterfinal clash with Morocco. The game is set for 9 a.m. ET.
