As we enter the second week of May, the baseball season has already seen one manager fired (the Pirates dismissed Derek Shelton) and the Orioles have emerged as the most disappointing team. The speculation surrounding Orioles manager Brandon Hyde’s job security has been growing louder with each loss.
With six losses in their last seven games leading up to Sunday, the Orioles have a day off before starting a six-game homestand on Tuesday. This upcoming homestand could be a critical juncture for a potential change.

Orioles general manager Mike Elias, however, does not seem inclined to make a change at this point. Hyde, in turn, expressed gratitude for the support from the front office over the weekend. According to The Baltimore Banner:
“I feel confident about the foundation we’ve laid here,” Hyde stated. “While we’ve had a slow start and faced challenges like injuries and setbacks, we have a long season ahead. Mike has shown immense respect and support for me, along with the entire front office and ownership. My focus is on the team, working with our current roster to win games and improve our performance.”

“He was patient during our initial struggles, and we eventually made progress,” Hyde added. “His patience this season, coupled with an understanding of our current roster situation, is something I truly appreciate.”
Hyde inherited a struggling Orioles team, with records of 54-108 in 2019 and 52-110 in 2021. However, the team turned things around, winning 83 games in 2022, 101 games and the AL East in 2023, and securing a wild-card spot with 91 wins last season.
Despite these achievements, the Orioles have yet to win a playoff game under Hyde’s leadership, with a 0-5 postseason record. The team’s current performance this season ranks among the worst in baseball, leading to questions about the manager’s role.
While some organizations opt for a managerial change in such situations, it appears that the Orioles are leaning towards retaining Hyde for now.
