The Baltimore Orioles made a significant move at the trade deadline by acquiring power hitter Eloy Jimenez from the Chicago White Sox. At 27 years old, Jimenez is facing the possibility of entering free agency this winter, with the Orioles holding a club option.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, it is unlikely that Baltimore will exercise this club option. However, despite recent injury setbacks, Jimenez’s age and career statistics could still attract interest from other teams in free agency.
“Having hit 31 home runs in his rookie year in 2019, Jimenez’s power numbers have declined in subsequent seasons due to injuries,” Bowden explained. “Nevertheless, with a career 115 OPS+, the 27-year-old slugger should appeal to teams looking for a value bat in the upcoming free agency market.”
Jimenez’s upcoming free agency is poised to be an intriguing storyline. While a long-term deal may not be on the horizon, there could be teams willing to take a chance on him with a one-year contract in hopes of unlocking his potential.
With several teams in need of a powerful right-handed bat, Jimenez’s skill set could be a valuable asset if placed in the right environment, despite his recent struggles.
Currently batting .265 with five home runs, 20 RBI, three stolen bases, and a .686 OPS, Jimenez’s production has dipped since his standout rookie season. The potential for a resurgence in his power numbers remains a possibility, as highlighted by Bowden in The Athletic.
It will be interesting to observe the level of interest Jimenez garners in free agency this winter.
