Paddy Pimblett expresses interest in welcoming Ilia Topuria to the lightweight division.
Topuria had a remarkable 2024, securing Fighter of the Year accolades for his impressive wins over Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. Despite only one title defense, the featherweight champion is eyeing a move to 155 pounds, with Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev in his sights. Pimblett, however, believes Topuria may be rushing his decision.
Pimblett remarked, “Ilia’s a midget compared to me. I would love to stand face to face with him to show everyone our size difference. He’s a talented fighter, but I think he was fast-tracked to the belt due to Volkanovski’s dominance in the division. He skipped some tough opponents to get there.”
“I don’t think he knocks out Volkanovski without the prior fight against Islam Makhachev. The rematch will be crucial. If he can beat Volk again and face other top contenders, then he might earn the title of best featherweight ever. But moving up after just one defense seems premature.”
The rivalry between Pimblett and Topuria dates back to 2022, with altercations at UFC events. Despite Topuria’s reluctance to settle the score in the cage, Pimblett is eager for a showdown in the lightweight division.
“If he decides to move up, I’ll be here to greet him. Our history demands a fair fight, and I’m ready to face him in the octagon,” Pimblett stated.
