The San Diego Padres have reinstated right-hander Yu Darvish from the restricted list and placed him on the 15-day injured list. This marks Darvish’s return to the field after an absence since May 29 due to various injuries and personal issues.
In a corresponding move, the Padres have designated infielder Matthew Batten for assignment to clear space on the roster. Darvish, who will not require a roster move until he is activated from the IL, will provide the Padres with added flexibility as rosters expand to 28 players on September 1.
The Padres recently sent starter Matt Waldron to the minors, leaving them with a four-pitcher rotation featuring Dylan Cease, Joe Musgrove, Michael King, and Martín Pérez.
Darvish, a veteran at 38, had a solid start to the season with a 3.20 ERA and a 3.53 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 11 appearances before his hiatus. With a decorated career that includes five All-Star Game appearances, Darvish brings a wealth of experience to the Padres’ pitching staff.
The Padres currently hold a 72-57 record, placing them half a game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the top wild-card spot in the National League. They also maintain a three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, the current third-place team in the wild-card race.
