Cristian Medina’s late goal in injury time initially seemed to secure a draw for Argentina against Morocco in the men’s soccer Olympics opener on Wednesday. However, VAR review deemed Medina offside, resulting in Morocco’s 2-1 victory.
Chaos erupted following the disallowed goal, with fans storming the pitch in Saint-Étienne, leading to a lengthy suspension of the match. Amid the confusion, the game was extended by 15 minutes of injury time, during which Morocco maintained their 2-1 lead, and Argentina’s attempts to equalize were thwarted by hitting the crossbar twice.
After the controversial VAR decision, the teams returned to the field, minus the spectators, and played an additional three minutes to conclude the match.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi took to Instagram to express his disbelief, posting “Insòlito” (unbelievable) with a surprised face emoji.
“It is the biggest circus I have ever seen in my life,” stated Argentina head coach Javier Mascherano.
Argentine TV reporting that the referee will review the play once the game begins as if there is something to interpret here. Per these official images it’s pretty clear.
This finish has been nothing short of absurd, scandalous and embarrassing. The Olympic Games… pic.twitter.com/Vm87llAmKv
