PGA Tour members who compete in LIV Golf qualifier in Florida would face disciplinary action

The PGA Tour is maintaining its strict rules in regards to LIV Golf.

Both Sports Illustrated and Golf Digest reported on Tuesday that the Tour will not allow any golfer to participate in the LIV Golf Promotions event in Florida in January if it conflicts with Tour events or media rights. Any Tour member who chooses to play in the LIV event will face disciplinary action.

Additionally, non-Tour members attempting to qualify for LIV Golf in January will receive a one-year ban from Tour-sanctioned events.

This rule was established in 2022 during LIV Golf’s first season when several Tour golfers joined LIV and were subsequently disciplined by the Tour.

Although the last two Promotions events took place in Saudi Arabia and allowed players with Tour status to compete with permission, the upcoming qualifying event for the 2026 season will be held in Florida.

The Promotions event offers a $1.5 million purse, with the top 10 finishers earning fully exempt status on the International Series. The top two finishers will secure a spot on the LIV Golf circuit in 2026.

While the Promotions event presents an opportunity to join LIV, it seems unlikely that any Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Champions, or PGA Tour Americas golfers will participate without approval.

Meetings between the Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which supports LIV Golf, have not taken place in months. Despite a reported $1.5 billion offer from the PIF earlier this year and discussions with President Donald Trump, a partnership between the two leagues has not been finalized.

It remains to be seen if the Tour and LIV Golf will reach an agreement in the future. For now, it appears that they are not yet prepared to collaborate on the golf course.
