Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham has been issued a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine by Major League Baseball for his “inappropriate actions toward fans” during Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, which the Pirates won 3-0.
Pham is currently appealing the suspension, which was supposed to be served in Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a result, he remains in the lineup for Friday’s game, batting sixth and playing left field.
The incident in question took place during the fifth inning of Wednesday’s game when Pham retrieved a double hit by Travis d’Arnaud in the left-field corner. A fan reached out to touch Pham on the back while trying to catch the ball with a glove.
Pham reacted by turning to look at the fan, glaring at them before throwing the ball back to the infield. As he returned to his position, Pham made an inappropriate gesture towards the fan, according to MLB.
Pham then motioned for the fan to come onto the field, apparently to resolve their disagreement face-to-face. This response differed significantly from how other players like Mookie Betts and Mike Trout handled similar situations with fans.
Before Friday’s game, Pham informed reporters that he had consulted with his lawyer regarding his legal rights in the incident, although the details of this conversation remain unclear.
This incident adds to a series of altercations Pham has been involved in, including a physical confrontation with the Milwaukee Brewers’ William Contreras in 2022 and a challenge to fight Luke Voit earlier this season.
In 2023, Pham engaged in a verbal altercation with a fan heckling him during a game against the San Diego Padres. Despite the fan’s claims, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo defended Pham, stating that the Padres fans were making derogatory remarks towards the outfielder.
Pham, who signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Pirates in February, has played for 10 different teams during his MLB career.
